Lily Erb, Crozet, VA

Lily Erb

My large, in-the-round steel sculptures convey the innate desire to enter womb-like safe spaces. Seed pods, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nests, and geological formations are my inspiration. When I look to three dimensional objects for inspiration, I am directly engaging my obsession with nurturing and protective spaces that cannot be entered as a fully formed being. In the creation of these spaces I explore the tension between the industrial and the organic visually and conceptually. I draw inspiration from natural forms that I translate through industrial processes, with an industrial material to form organic objects. Then I paint the work bright colors to abstract it from its inspiration. The juxtaposition of hand-bent and straight pieces of steel in my latest work continues the dialogue between the industrial and the organic.

The interior of tangle//untangle is already occupied by steel. In the creation of theses spaces I explore the tension between the industrial and the organic visually and conceptually.
