My trip to Moab last fall provided the creative spark for this sculpture. During my visit, I was inspired by the dramatic geology, the powerful river, and the soaring crows and ravens that seemed to keep an eye on everything as they swooped across the landscape. Wherever I went, the corvids seemed to appear out of nowhere, as if watching out for me or perhaps wanting to communicate a message. Suddenly, whenever I heard the caw of the crow or groak groak of the raven, I felt called to ‘pay attention.’

The aerial view from the birds’ vantage point invites us to take a broader view of our lives and affairs here on earth. An elevated perspective offers a higher level of understanding that helps us see beyond our individual day-to-day worries and concerns. Seeing how everything is connected from above invites us to consider our interrelationships, connectedness and responsibilities to all living things on our planet.

Even now, after my return home to Arizona, I notice the corvids who visit and call out. Without even thinking,
I feel connected to their presence and listen to their messages for unity.
